A nightmare is a disturbing dream that can cause negative feelings, such as fear or anxiety, and wake you up. Nightmares can be caused by a number of factors, including:

Psychological causes: Stress, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Physical causes: Illness, fever, or sleeping in an uncomfortable position

Medications and narcotics: Side effects from amphetamines, cocaine, or other drugs

Eating before bed: Triggers an increase in brain activity and metabolism

Nightmares are more likely to occur during REM sleep, which is when most dreaming takes place. Because REM sleep increases as the night progresses, nightmares are more likely to happen in the early morning.
